CIS Community Outreach

Children’s International School partnered with the Tree Stewards of Arlington and Alexandria, a non-profit organization, to restore the tree canopy in the Rosslyn Circle Area.  This area was filled with trash and overgrown with invasive plants that have recently been removed.  CIS raised the funds to purchase the trees:  Willow Oaks, Dogwoods, Tulip trees and Red Oaks.  On April 29, 2018, CIS, National Park Service and Rosslyn BID joined forces to plant the trees.  For more information on this project, please visit:  https://www.rosslynva.org/feature/childrens-international-school

Children's International actively participates in both local and global outreach efforts.  We believe that it is important to give back and teach our children to be engaged, social citizens.  Here are a few of our projects.

This past December, we taught our children what "philanthropy" means and why it's important to give back.  They voted for a cause that was important to them and then created a 2018 calendar.  Proceeds from the selling of these calendars went to the causes that they voted on.  The pre-K class at our FSI location chose to help dogs.   With the money raised, we donated dog food, collars, and supplies to the Arlington Animal Welfare League.

The pre-K class at our North Scott location voted to help improve playgrounds for children.   With the money raised, we donated outdoor play equipment to Doorways for Women and Families,  a non-profit organization in Arlington, Va that helps women and families who are victims of domestic violence.

Through a partnership with the VA-based non-profit, Arlington Academy of Hope, CIS has also adopted a “sister school” located in Uganda, Africa which serves children with learning disabilities.  In addition, our staff and parents help sponsor the primary education of children based in Uganda as well as help donate medical supplies to the AAH health clinics. 

The CIS founder, Beatrice Tierney, helped build two health clinics in Uganda. One in Buwulakani (2006) and the other in Bupato (2008), both providing much-needed health care to those regions. The Harvard Magazine did a feature article on The Beatrice Tierney Health Center.
